SPAN 350 Cultural Icons in Latin America

An exploration of how major Latin American cultural icons are represented in literature, film, the visual arts, and popular culture. This course considers the historical / literary context in which the figures first appear, as well as the appropriation of cultural icons as a strategy of political, social, artistic, and personal identification. Icons under consideration may include Sor Juana, La Malinche, Pancho Villa, la Virgen de Guadalupe, Che Guevara, Frida Kahlo, Julia de Burgos, and others. Prerequisite: one Spanish course at the 300-level.
